More of Ava in her tutus

Martzke_703_proof I am having so much fun proofing this session!  Ava was so expressive, and she loved all of her outfits so much.  It's funny how much I love doing these tutu sessions, given that my shooting style is so simple, with no props, lots of close-ups, and clean, solid backgrounds.  I'm so thankful that I was blessed with a daughter who loves the girly stuff so much, or I never would have discovered how much fun a tutu could be!
Julie, I know you've been patiently waiting to see Ava's session, so here are a few more to tide you over...

Haley Smiles

Dredge_101_proof I haven't had that many sessions lately, because I've been so focused on working on the changes in my business.  Today I had a mini-session with a new client, and it was such a nice change of pace from all the researching, planning, number crunching, etc.  I've been a little overwhelmed lately with all the thought I've been putting into this.  Hailey was just what the doctor ordered!

She was so happy, and such a delight to photograph.  She had just enough energy to be fun to work with, without being at all challenging, and she had the most humongous smiles!  I won't be done with the entire session for a week or so, but here's a little peek at what I got to do today.

The Chair

03_24 For those about to potty train twin boys...we salute you.

I thought re-structuring my business and planning a studio space was a challenge.  Silly me.  This pales in comparison to the real challenge that lies before me, and all I have in my arsenal is this poor, cheerful little chair with the hopeful happy faces.

Wish us luck...

It's mine!

It looks like the space I applied for is going to be mine!  It took some negotiation to get the remodeling done that I wanted, but it seems like we've come to an agreement that works for everyone.  Now I just have to wait for them to get to work...

Outside_building Now that I know it's going to work out, I can tell you about it without jinxing it.  It's a 943 square foot space on the second floor of a newer building in the industrial park a few minutes from my house.  The building itself is nothing exciting, but it's clean, well-maintained, and I get a sign over the door, which is nice.  Floorplan_beforeHere is a picture of the building, but my name isn't really there yet, I just wanted to see how it would look.  (I'm a bit of a geek, I know.)

It is basically one main room with two large offices, but I asked them to tear down the wall between the two offices and wall up one of the doors, so I'll end up with two rooms. The front room will be where I meet with clients to prepare for our session, and also where I'll show slide shows of their session and take their orders.  The back room with the big windows will be my studio where I actually do the photo sessions.  I'll be able to use natural light or work with my studio lights, which will be nice.

Floorplan_after Here is the layout after the remodel is done.  It will have a space for me to package prints, frames, etc., and a place in the front room for a small play area for the kids so they'll have something to do while mom and dad are watching the slideshow and placing their order.  There are some cabinets near the top wall where I can have snacks, coffee, juice, water, etc., and just behind that wall, next to the bathrooms, there is just enough room for a changing table so there is a nice clean place for diaper changes.

Studio_before_1 Here are some photos of the actual space. The first one is what you see when you come up the stairs.  How do you like that yellow?  I think it looks particularly nice with the dark gray carpet.  One of the doorways and and both of the glass panels will be replaced by a wall.   As much as I like the natural light that the glass panels provide, the idea of all that glass at kid level is a little too scary for me!

Studio_before_2 The second picture is taken from that far corner where the previous tenant thoughtfully left behind a giant poster of Elvis.  This angle shows the rest of the front room, the bathroom, and the cabinets.  I think the only thing better then the bright yellow is when you mix it with bright green and blue.  A fresh paint job and new flooring were the first items on my negotiation list!

Now that I've got the space, I need to finish my final floorplan, shop for furniture, select prints to go on the walls and come up with displays for them.   (Any interior designers out there looking for a barter for portraits?)

I've also found just the right graphic designer to help me whip my branding/marketing/packaging into shape.  We met the other day to discuss my business goals and see what she could do for me.  Her work is wonderful, and I felt like she understood what I was looking for and how to get me there.  I can't wait to see what she comes up with!

It's all very exciting stuff.  I'll keep you posted!

Lil' Redhead

Feldman_710_proof I have been photographing the cutest little redhead, Regan, for the past several years, and last week I got to work with her new baby brother, who looks like he is going to share that same gorgeous hair color!

The Big Plan

03_17 So, I don't know if you know this about me, but I LOVE research.  It's some kind of thrill-of-the-hunt thing, I don't know.  It's probably what inspired me to offer workshops in the first place.  I had massive amounts of information just laying around, and I thought others might want to benefit from the hours, days, probably months of time I put into collecting it all.

This mammoth notebook is why I've been sporadic with my posting lately.  I've been deep in research mode, planning for my move into a studio space.  I'm still waiting to hear about the space I applied for last Thursday, but at this point I've decided I am most definitely moving into a space, even if this particular location doesn't work out.

Since I'm making the big move to a studio space, I'm thinking about re-vamping my marketing materials, my presentation and packaging, and my entire way of running my business, moving more toward a boutique photography studio business model.

I'll keep you posted...

Tutu Cuties Mini Session

Martzke_703_proof This is little Ava, and last weekend we got to play with my box of tutus for a Tutu Cuties mini session.  Ava got to choose three looks as part of the session, so we started off with the classic... a pink tutu and iridescent wings.  Very sweet.

Then we had some fun with one of my favorite tutus... the baby chicken set.  Gotta love that headdress.  Makes me laugh every time.

Finally, we ended with my brand new pettiskirt.  I've only used it a few times, and I think I have a new addiction.  They are so soft and full, the little girls just love it.  As soon as it's on, they twirl around, jump up and down, dance around, and it's the only one they never want to take off at the end.  Ava was the first teeny girl to wear it, so I fashioned it into a halter dress to keep it from falling off her little tummy.

Thanks Ava!  You were so much fun to photograph.

The Big Step

03_12 This picture is saying to me "Hello Autumn.  I'm a loft space with hideous colors and a heart of gold.  Won't you please adopt me, clean me up pretty, and make a studio out of me?"

Today I officially put in a bid for a studio space of my own.  After almost 9 years of shooting out of my garage, it's time to take the next step.  I found a place with a great location, just the right size, in an affordable price range, and the most awful wall colors I've ever seen.  Upstairs they mixed the pea-green and mustard with a surprising navy blue colored wall, just for fun.  Ugh.  Part of my proposal includes requests for new floor and new paint, so I'm hoping they throw that in for me so I don't have to do it myself.

Tomorrow I turn in all of my application paperwork and wait to see how they received my proposal.  They'll either accept it, or it's negotiation time.

If I get this space, it will not only be perfect for shooting and presenting proofs, but it's a great size to host the workshops that up until now I've had to hold at a meeting room in a nearby hotel.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Finally finished!

Travinsky_116_proof There has been so much going on here lately, sick kids, workshops, looking for a studio space, etc., etc, etc, that I haven't had as much time in Photoshop as I usually do, and what should have taken a day or two ended up dragging on for two weeks.  I finally finished the session for Mack, an ADORABLE little tiny newborn, who is probably driving his first car by now since I've made them wait so long to see these pictures!

Here are a couple more from the session, which I will post in its entirety as soon as I get my website squared away.  Looks like I need to move hosts, which is always a pain.  Sigh...

Michelle, here are a few more to look at until I can post the whole session.
